Spring is in the air and that can only ean one thing, well two really, but most important is the return of speedway racing to Southern California. The 1999 edition of the spring classic got under way Saturday night and a huge crowd waited out the early morning rain and made the trip to So Cal.

Saturdays fans were treated to some fantastic early season racing and even a bit of history. It was not the two riders carried out by ambulance, it was not a female swinger on a sidecar, not even Eddie Castro winnning a handicap Main Event. In fact it was in the support class. I don't ussually spend alot of time talking about the support class. Not because they don't matter but rather because I only have so many hours after the races and I do get sleepy. Excusses Exceusses.  This night deserves more time. Three time and defending Junior National Champion Ryan Fisher made his 500cc deput Saturday night. Not since ...Billy Hamil or Greg Hancock or I don't know maybe not even those two World Champoins have I seen a rider with so much early talent. I have been comming to Costa Mesa since 1969 and I trully cannot think of a rider that seemed to have so much ability.  Granted Ryan was racing in support class and that is way different than 1st division.  But if you look at the superstars of past none showed nearly as much as Ryan. My guess is that Ryan will have a 1st division ride in record time. Maybe two or three weeks into the season. He just needs to win a few more from the back yardage.

My advise to anyone who cares...Promote the crap out of this kid. 16 yrs old, proven winner, local, what more could you ask. I think some people missed it with Chris Manchester. Chris could have been one of the alltime greatest. He chose to go overseas and race for the big prize. A great choice. Until Ryan makes that same choice, and he probably will, we should just start clearing a spot in victory lane. Give him half the season in 1st division and he should own victory lane.

Congtat's to Billy Hamil for winning the scratch main event and Eddie Castro for the handicap main.
